On the occasion of the Centenary of the Gallipoli Campaign in 2015, it is our great honor to invite you to an event organized by the Association “Lemnos’ Friends of ANZAC”, in collaboration with the Hellenic-Australian Business Council, for the presentation of the Association’s objectives as well as the commemorative events and cultural activities taking place in Lemnos during the Commemoration Year. The event will be held at 19.30 hrs on Wednesday, 26 November 2014 at the Hotel ‘Stratos Vassilikos’, 114 Mihalakopoulou Street in Athens.

As you are aware, the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, during the First World War, constitutes a significant historical event and a defining moment in the common legacies of our nations. For Lemnos, the Centenary is a milestone of special significance. As the principal assembly, embarkation and supply point of the Entente forces for the Gallipoli landings, Lemnos’ role was critical to the Campaign. At a time of great hardship for the local population, Lemnians welcomed and assisted the thousands of service men and women based on the island. The island became a safe-haven, a welcome respite from the horror of war on the peninsula. It was the place to recuperate and recover from wounds. It remains to date, the final resting place for many who lost their lives in service.

Through a number of commemorative events and cultural activities throughout the Commemorative year, the people of Lemnos will honor the service and sacrifice of the men and women who served at the Campaign, but also pay tribute and recognize the significant contribution of their own forebears.

The Centenary Commemoration of the Gallipoli Campaign provides an important opportunity to all of us, to reflect upon and learn from our common history. The Gallipoli Campaign remains to this day, a testament of courage, bravery and self-sacrifice on all sides of the conflict. It is a historic event, that has shaped our national identities, that has forged unbreakable bonds of friendship.
